FWB and 4th Edition

Sometimes, Foreign White Bordered and 4th Edition cards are hard to tell apart. This is a guide how to identify the most cards through a few features, followed by a still incomplete list of hard to distinguish cards.

Information

1. Set names

Revised Edition (a. k. a. 3rd Edition) was also released in Italian, French and German. All had a black bordered and a white bordered print run. In German and Italian cards, the last ones as well as the printings of 4th Edition both show a similar frame design and the copyright date 1995.

French FWB cards are easy to recognize, all have a black line around the frame like English Unlimited and Revised cards.

Italian FWB cards have a black dot on the back, whereas 4th Edition cards don't.

Current names are:

German Unlimited/German Revised/3rd Edition White Border (original: Unlimitierte Auflage)
Italian Unlimited/Italian Revised/3rd Edition White Border/Italian Second Edition (original: Seconda Edizione)

Everything with the Revised list is referred to as Foreign White Bordered (FWB).

2. Easy to identify cards

Easy to identify cards are defined here as identifiable with only minimal knowledge. The minimal required information that clear the set of many cards is:

— The list of Revised and 4th Edition. Some cards were released in only one of the two

— Between FWB and 4th Edition, the card name's font was changed slighty. FWB uses slash marks above lowercase i or j, while 4th uses more of a round dot:

— Additionally, some German cards show the letters ä, ö and ü. The dots of FWB cards are well aligned, whereas they are shifted to the left in 4th Edition:

shifted trema

(Other sometimes mentioned features like the letters g, p, y  touching vs. not touching the black line underneath aren't reliable, as the names aren't aligned the same on all cards and thus sometimes both are touching. Nor the color is a recommendable indicator.)

Exceptions:

Some Italian FWB cards exist in two versions (left and middle), one showing round i dots :

Italian 3 versions

From left to right: Italian FWB first print run, Italian FWB second print run, Italian 4th Edition.

Others:

— In Italian FWB, several cards show the redesigned mana symbols and/or have a bold white copyright and partially or totally shifted type file (see picture above). Italian 4th cards have round i dots and the old (white and black second version) mana symbols.

3. Hard to identify cards

Cards that can't be distinguished by trema, i. e. neither have i, j, ä, ö and ü in their names nor a black dot on the back.

The most secure feature to look at is the difference of the alignment of the typescript and casting cost symbols. In FWB cards, they are lower aligned than in 4th cards. As this ranges in the submillimeters, it's only possible to determine the set if both versions of the same card are compared. Two different cards won't always do it, the alignment is not the same on all cards from the same set.

On the other hand, many cards show a little difference in the wording, line breaking, font size and/or centering, and once they are known, they won't make much problems anymore. For that, the following list contains all cards which were printed in both FWB and 4th and don't have a trema letter in their name. Different layouts are described, cards that are identical except for alignment are pictured (FWB on the left, 4th Edition on the right).

Note: German 4th Edition cards exist with and without a black dot on the back, FWB cards always feature it. Hence, all German © 1995 white-bordered cards without dot are 4th Edition for sure. Cards with the black dot can be either.

List of hard to identify cards

This list is based on thorough research and has been double-checked by sealed product opening videos and photos in many cases. If contradictory information surfaces, cards from the Introductory Two-Players Set (© 1996) might be involved. Everyone is invited to help in improving this list by sending high-resolution scans of missing and questionable cards, or any hints. Checking for the black dot on the back can clear things as well.
